What is a Mezuzah?

A Mezuzah is a small parchment (klaf) inscribed by a certified Sofer STaM with two passages from Devarim (Shema and V'haya). It is affixed to the right-hand doorpost of every entryway in a Jewish home, fulfilling a positive Torah commandment.

Sizes

Common sizes are 7cm, 10cm, 12cm, and 15cm. The larger the mezuzah, the larger and more elaborate the letters — and the higher the price. For a mainstream home, 10–12cm is typical.

Scripts

Ashkenazim traditionally use the Beit Yosef script; Sephardim use the Ari Zal (Arizal) script. Both are equally kosher when written by a qualified Sofer.

Certification

A kosher mezuzah is inspected by a Rav and, additionally, computer-checked to catch any missing or malformed letter. On Kodesh, every scroll carries both certifications.
